Pictures From Day Three of the City of Toronto Strike

Alright, everyone is talking garbage – here is garbage. These pictures were taken on Yonge Street south of Queen, one of Bay Street at Lakeshore and the vast majority on Queen Street between City Hall and just west of Spadina.

For folks who find themselves holding garbage with no where to put it, do what I did yesterday with a Starbucks cup – I found another Starbucks, stopped in and put it in their garbage. My rationale is that it is really their garbage anyways, and it saved me having to both bring it home or add to one of these ‘garbage jenga’ bins or what I am sure is soon to become some kind of modern urban art. Plus, what are they going to say, honestly? Try it with your next cup of Tim Hortons or Starbucks, it will help keep the streets cleaner, I’m sure.

I also want to note that the dude who threw out a bike tire – that never was meant for one of these bins, same goes for whoever threw the bags of gas soaked dirt near City Hall. I find the black garbage bags mysteriously out of place. That isn’t strike related, it’s littering. Same goes for the lady who abandoned her flip flops.

The people of this city make a poor example to follow considering the fact that there is such complaint re the city workers being on strike. Ordinary residential waste collection, under normal circumstances, would have resumed on Tuesday. How can the volume of waste being produced be so great that on Monday everybody had to be going to the transfer station? If there was no strike, and you had a Thursday collection day, than the waste would still be on your property on Wednesday anyway, regardless of the weather. It is high time that people understand the true value of labour organization and rally together, that is to say all those that are a unit of labour, to push for the private sector to finally follow the lead of the public sector in establishing a work environment that recognizes the importance of the employees that perform the work rather than holding people under pressure. People are trying to provide for themselves and their families, private sector organization slashes and burns wages and benefits at the expense of employees for the sake of an increased profit margin.

Great photos! Makes you wonder if the media companies are still paying for the garbage can ads. Advertising works in reverse if you tack it onto a pile of trash.

Gotta agree with Al here. People are working 50-60 hours a week to keep themselves going. If the banks holding you in debt and your employer’s paying you squat, you’re little more than a slave right? Keep working yourself to death so you don’t starve.

I’m in a union, i get a decent wage. I hate when people try and criticize those of us who are getting a fair deal. Garbage men make a decent income doing work most people would not handle. They are defending the fair deal that they’ve have been receiving. Those of you working jobs for a pittance in the private sector need to wake up and realize that you are getting ripped off.

As many residents of Toronto face the challenges that the current garbage strike has left them, one man has taken a new approach to a solution. Roofer Dave of Toronto has suspended his regular business tasks, and now offers residents a way to get rid of their trash in a safe and environmentally friendly way. Trash is collected for merely five dollars per twenty pound bag and taken to licenced disposal facilities for disposal (NOT THE CITY TEMPORARY DUMP SITES) Dave’s plan is to ease the pain residents are feeling not add to it. According to Roofer Dave, “We are currently working on recycling efforts to divert as much as we can from land fills. We will have more on this as facilities get back to us.” Finding Roofer Dave on his route is easy, simply follow @fivebucksabag on Twitter to see where and when he may be in your neighbourhood or contact him through his web site at http://www.fivebucksabag.com.
